A Georgian adjustable candle stand. This example is turned from fruitwood, probably apple, so it has a lovely mellow colour.
 
A candle stick would be placed on the top of the stand. The stand can be adjusted in height with the small side handle which when loosened allows a central wood stick to be pulled up from inside the base. Similar ones illustrated in Pinto.
The thumb screw tightens nicely onto the internal stem to hold in place whether in the extended position or the closed position.
The circular base is lead weighted a good sign of quality, this would make the stand more stable.
