A late 1700s coquilla nutmeg grater in the shape of a barrel. This pocket size nutmeg grater which has been well turned, unscrews in the middle to reveal the grater. The grater un screws for storage of the precious nutmeg inside.

These pocket nutmeg graters made from coquilla nut were particularly popular around the late 1700s into the early 1800s. They would be carried around in a pocket and were used to freshly grate nutmeg into mulled wine or on to hot toasted crumpets - both sound appealing...

It measures 6.2cm h x approx 4cm w in the middle.
