This is a lovely Georgian inlaid stationery box with many attributes.
This box has a very decorative lid with floral ovals and circular ovals/roundels. Note the shading on the roundels were the darker patches will have been burnt by sprinkling hot sand - known as pyrograph or poker work..Each piece of inlay is bordered with boxwood and ebony stringing along with cross banding in tulip wood.
The sides of the box are inlaid with 3D cubes and various crossbandings.
Opening up the box there is a lovely lined lid panel with birds eye maple and various crossbandings including tulip wood and rosewood.
Unusually there is a further fitted lid with a birds eye maple panel which lifts off for storage of your stationery.
The solid lid panel could have been used as a small lap desk to write short cards or notes.
The box measures 21.5cm w x 14cm d x 7cm h.
