A lovely most unusual pitch pine salt/candle box for hanging on the wall. Nicely shaped backboard. Lovely colour and patina.C 1830/40.

Salt was used alot as a preservative but being hydroscopic it needed to be kept away from water which was sloshed over the floors so wall hanging boxes were made. Nowadays these boxes can be  used  to store lots of different items in, particularly for smaller candles and tee lights.
