An early 19th century coquilla nutmeg grater

An early 19th century turned coquilla nutmeg grater in the shape of a barrel. Top unscrews to reveal the grater, which itself unscrews for storage of the nutmegs. In excellent condition with only a very small hairline crack to lid of approx 1cm, which is not noticeable.

Pocket nutmeg graters were carried around in pockets during early 19th century when mulled wine was popular.

Coquilla nut comes from the Attalea funifera tree, Brazilians call the Palm and are the size and shape of a hens egg, being a rich brown colour.
