A 19th century  beech wood treen  humming top with handle. The idea was to wrap some cord around the elongated stem of the humming top, and  then pull and unwind the cotton/cord it for extra spin. The handle was there for holding the top upright with one hand whilst pulling the cotton/cord with the other. The small opening allows the top to hum. Often the handles are missing from the tops so its nice to have them together.
